Bouman downs world champ to win dramatic series pipe-opener

Durban - Matt Bouman pipped defending champion Grant van der Walt to the finish to win the Billy The Bums Surfski Challenge, the first leg of the Varsity College Marine Surfski Series on Friday night in a race laced with drama.

The pair turned at the final buoy off Ushaka beach side by side and rode the  small wave into the finish together, where Bouman powered away to claim victory over the reigning Under 23 world marathon champion by three boatlengths.

Oliver Burn finished third ahead of Marc Holtzhausen and the junior world marathon champ Brandon van der Walt, who took the Under 18 honours.

The race attracted a big field, which had to deal with conditions deteriorating as the race wore on.

Defending doubles champs Herman Chalupsky and Andre Pohl reinforced their status as the crew to beat this season as they pulled away from Grant Woollaston and Quinton Rutherford, with the on-form siblings Marc and Angelique Mulder finishing third, and the first mixed double home.

Donna Winter took full advantage of the depleted women's field to post an emphatic victory over Danica Vorster and junior Jenna Ward. She banked maximum series points, and is looking forward to the return of Michelle Eder in next weeks race.

The second race of the Varsity College Marine Surf Ski Series takes place next Friday evening 29 January at 5:30 from Ushaka Beach
